Hugh Mogensen
Mr. Mogensen is distinguished Canadian geologist who has established, managed
and directed numerous oil and gas and mining companies in Canada and the United
States. He is currently an active investor with a particular interest in start-up
companies. Since retiring to Victoria in 1992, he has been a strong supporter
of the community, particularly in the arts and causes related to the well-being
of children.
After graduating from the University of Alberta in 1956, Hugh has had a long career in petroleum and mining exploration and management. In 1971 he was appointed Manager, International Operations for Canadian Industrial Oil and Gas Ltd. (later called Norcen Energy Resources Ltd.) and for the next six years directed the company's exploration projects in the North Sea, Tunisia, Oman, offshore Vietnam, Australia, and the United States. In 1979 he was appointed President and CEO of Campbell Chibougamau Mines Ltd. (later known as Campbell Resources Ltd.) with copper and gold production in northern Quebec, coal operations in Kentucky and oil and gas operations in western Canada. When in 1980 these oil operations were rolled into a separate oil and gas company called Inverness Petroleum Ltd. he also became President, and a year later Chairman of the Board of Inverness.
Late in 1982, Hugh established a family-owned oil and gas company and participated in many exploration and production projects in western Canada. About the same time he established a consulting company to manage a large exploration project on Canada lands in the Northwest Territories and offshore Newfoundland. In 1986 Hugh and his wife 'retired' to Victoria where he continued his consulting activities and for a few years became increasingly involved in assisting with the financing of several mining companies. By 1997 he was serving on the Boards of Directors of 15 natural resource companies, both oil and mining. At the present time he has reduced his number of directorships to four, among which he is Chairman of the Board of Keywest Energy Corporation. He was a long time member of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and remains a Life Member of The Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta.
