Neena L. Chappell, PhD
Dr. Chappell is perhaps Canada’s leading specialist in the study of aging and the informal support and formal care of the elderly. She was the first Director of the Centre on Aging at the University of Victoria, where she currently holds a Canada Research Chair in Social Gerontology. She has been widely recognized for her research, including the Social Sciences Research Award, University of Victoria (2002), A.D. Dutton Alumni Award, Carleton University (2001), Claude P. Beaubien Medal, Alzheimer Canada for Excellence in Research (2001), Advising Professor, honor bestowed by East Normal China University, Shanghai (1999).

She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Gerontological Society of America (which has recognized her as an “outstanding and continuing contributor to the advancement of gerontology”). She is a Member, B.C. advisory committee, Canada Volunteer Initiative, 2003-, Member, Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation Board, 2003-, a Senior Advisor to the Development of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, Institute on Aging, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, 2002–, Member, College of Reviewers, Canada Research Chairs Program, 2002–, Member, Advisory Board for the CIHR Institute of Health Aging, 2001–04, and any others.

She is or has been an expert advisor to the Governments of Canada (Health Protection Branch, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Health Promotion Directorate, Long Range Planning, Health and Welfare Canada, National Advisory Council on Aging, Seniors Secretariat, and Statistics Canada), Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Bermuda; the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, World Health Organization, United Nations, Canadian Association of Retired Persons, American Association of Retired Persons, Centre for Studies of Aging, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Aging, Department of Sociology, University of Western Ontario, and the McConnell Foundation
