Sir Peter North CBE QC DCL FBA
Sir Peter brings a wide range of experience and skills to the both our International Advisory Board and the Academic Council. He is the Principal of Jesus College, Oxford, and was Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1993-97. He is a lawyer by training and is an Honorary QC. He has been actively involved in law reform in the UK and abroad since the time he served as a Law Commissioner from 1976-84.

He has chaired a number of major policy reviews on behalf of government, the most recent of which was the Independent Review of Parades and Marches in Northern Ireland which resulted in the Public Processions Act 1998. From 1985-88, Sir Peter also led the review of Road Traffic Law in the UK. He has just assumed the Chairmanship of ICSTIS, the UK’s Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services, the industry-funded watchdog for premium rate telephone services. He is known for his integrity, sound judgement and strong analytical skills, enabling him to build consensus and achieve objectives, often in very challenging situations. The existing carriers of premium rate services are BT, Cable and Wireless, Colt, Core communications, EasyNet, Interoute, MCI Worldcom, Norweb Communications, One 2 One, Opal Telecom, Orange, Redstone Network Services, Scottish Telecom, Spacetel, Telecom One, Telewest, Telinco, Torch Telecom, Vodafone Value Added Data Services and World Telecom.

Sir Peter assumes the ICSTIS Chairmanship at a challenging time, when the UK premium rate market - one of the largest in the world - has become increasingly more competitive, with more network operators and a wider range of tariffs than ever before. New types of service are constantly being developed, many of which take advantage of new interactive technologies. In this role he brings very special and relevant experience to LWI which will depend to a great degree upon such technologies.
